The Parliament of Ghana on Monday presented a cheque of GHC 50,000.00 to the University of Ghana Alumni Council, to be paid into the University of Ghana Endowment Fund.
The presentation was to redeem a pledge by the Speaker, Prof Aaron Michael Oquaye, when he delivered the 2018 Alumni Lecture of the University of Ghana last October.
In a brief remark, the Speaker reiterated the need for old students of educational institutions to forge a united front to support their alma maters.“Many good things can come from collective efforts; we should not just be looking up to Government to satisfy the needs of the University, Prof Oquaye said.
He urged people placed in positions to remember their former schools to help develop their infrastructure, recalling that, some institutions in advanced nations are surrounded by hostels and buildings for both lecturers and students to facilitate easy movement on the campuses.
Mr Richard Obeng Okrah, Chairman of the University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGAA), thanked the Speaker and the House for the donations. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, last May launched the USD 100 million University of Ghana Endowment Fund, to provide additional funding and resources to enable the University to improve upon the delivery on its mandate, with proceeds from the Fund going into assisting in the provision of additional facilities to enhance research and teaching.
