The Chiefs and people of Beposo, near Shama in the Western Region, have expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the Western Regional Police Command for initiating effective road safety measures to curb preventable road accidents which occur at the Beposo market zone periodically.
The Police action followed a petition directed to the command recently by members of the Beposo Youth Association with the support of the Beposo Traditional Authority and the Assemblyman for the area, on how such undesirable misfortune could be dealt with appropriately.
The inhabitants hoped that the police initiative would definitely provide safety not only for people in Beposo Town and surrounding villages alone, but also hundreds of farmers, traders and individuals from the various parts of the country who patronize the Beposo market on Tuesdays and Fridays every week.
Mr. Joshua Kobbina Johnson, Secretary to the Beposo Youth Association told a Ghana News Agency that, leaders of the community were deeply concerned about the reckless driving nature of some recalcitrant commercial transport operators who patronize the market almost every week, hence the petition.
Mr. Johnson said these drivers were more often than not, wilfully refused to adhere to the advice from representatives of the developmental groups operating in the Town to stop their improper and dangerous packing of their vehicles along the Accra-Takoradi Highway at the Beposo market area.
He recalled several instances whereby the inordinate behaviour of these recalcitrant commercial drivers who ply the Takoradi-Accra road, particularly those who patronize the Beposo market to cart goods and passengers had virtually caused Fatal Motor Accidents, adding that ‘’we the leaders of this fast-growing community wish to assure the police of our maximum support at all times.
‘’The petition, Mr. Joshua Kobbina Johnson further stated, was designed to protect the lives of both pedestrians and drivers themselves because the nation needed their contribution to enhance the overall advancement of the country’’.
