With a market share of 55%, MTN has contributed GHC 1,059 billion to the Ghana Revenue Authority and GHC 159.4 million to NCA/GIFEC
Giving an overview of the achievements of 2017, the CEO and Vice President of Southern and East Africa as well as Ghana, Mr Ebenezer Twum Asante, said that MTN Ghana set out to deliver enriched customer service, expanded Data, Digital and Valued Added services, scale up Mobile Money services, launch Fiber Broadband services, expand network in unreached areas and broaden partnerships.
Data coverage was expanded up to 50%. Mobile money was extended significantly. From 2million in 2012, subscriber base increased to 11.6million in 2017. In a 30 day period, the Company had 8.3million active mobile money wallets and 90,000 active agents. He said that between January 2016 and December 2017, a total of 98.9 million cedis was paid as interest to subscribers, with an average commission of GHC 19.6million being paid monthly to the agents. So far, they have partnered 16 banks.
Mr Twum Asante said that MTN mobile money is being extended onto the global platform. At the moment, they have partnered with Google and people can pay for items on the playstore. Mr Twum Asante noted that it was the hope of MTN to get into every sphere of people’s lives so that there would be no need to queue for any service.
Data is making a significant contribution to the MTN purse as well. In 2013, while it contributed 6.8% to the purse, its contribution grew to 24.6% in 2017.
2017 also saw the launch of Fibre Broadband to key business and residential places. By the end of the year, about 20,000 homes were covered with Fibre Broadband in Greater Accra, Eastern and
Ashanti Regions.
On the Education front, MTN has provided libraries, dormitories, classrooms, scholarships and youth development & leadership skills where needed.
In the field of health, MTN has provided wards, incubators, maternity blocks, surgeries, etc.
They have also assisted with various economic empowerment projects helping women in the Shea butter and oil palm industries.
Mr Ebenezer Twum noted that MTN was poised to continue growing and achieve a lot more for its customers and the country.
