The Department of Organisation and Human Resource Management (OHRM) of the UGBS in September, 2017, organised a Corporate Executive in Residence session at the School’s Graduate Block. Mr. Frederick Attakumah, Executive for Corporate Affairs, and the Director of Asanko Gold Ghana Limited was the speaker, on the topic “Who Makes Up Your Team”.

In his presentation, Mr. Attakumah set the ball rolling by comparing a business to a football team in which each member of the team plays a role in bringing positive results. He stressed on the need for the students to know and understand the value of each team member in their organisation. He stated that there are three structures of a team which are: Value Creators, Value Enhancers and Value Neutrals.

Speaking on the three structures of a team, he explained that value creators are able to come up with solutions to issues and lead the creative process most often. They are also few in number and hard to manage. Value enhancers do not usually generate the solutions themselves but they add more to the solution proposed. The third group he mentioned are the value neutrals. This group, through their actions and inactions, bring down the value of the team and its objectives.

He mentioned that students must envision the kind of team player they want to be, what their goals and objectives are and which of the three personalities stated above best fit them. This will help in delegating roles, he added. He also addressed some questions that were raised by the students. Mr. Frederick Attakumah concluded by encouraging the students to be more of value enhancers and value creators in their various organisations.

Dr. Kwasi Dartey-Baah, Head of the Department of Organisation and Human Resource Management (OHRM), thanked Mr. Attakumah for making time to share his knowledge. He advised the students to make use of the knowledge gained from the lecture to build better teams for the success of the organisations.
