About 1,820 school children drawn from Basic, Senior High Schools and voluntary organisations in Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality took part in the 60th Independence Anniversary Parade at the Tarkwa Na Aboso Park.
The usual crowd, which characterized the occasion, increased this year.
The Divisional Commander for Tarkwa Nsueam, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Emond Ohene Bosompim, Member of Parliament, Mr. George Meriku Duker and Presiding Member, Mr Benjamin Kessie took the salute.
The theme for this year’s anniversary was “ Mobilising for Ghana’s future”.
Delivering a speech on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsueam, Mr George Meriku Duker said Ghanaians needed to pay homage to those who contributed to the political freedom of this county.
“We have a right to exploit the bounties of the earth and extract the minerals and even redirect the path of the River, but we do not have the right to denude the land of the plants and fauna nor poison the Rivers and Lakes”.He noted.
Mr Duker emphasised that there was nothing Ghanaians could do better to pay homage to those who fought to free them from bondage than to dedicate this 60th independence anniversary to protect their environment and regenerate the lands and water bodies.
Four students from Junior High and Senior High School were honoured for their excellent performance in the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
