Eni Foundation (Jubilee Partner) and Focus Organization, a Non -governmental Organization, have jointly donated assorted medical equipment to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Half-Assini Government Hospital. The items included four Infant Incubators, two Infant Radiant Wormers, one each Phototherapy, a Suction machine, Pulse Odometer and a Glucometer amongst others.
Eni-Foundation also recently donated an ambulance to the Hospital and inaugurated a new Emergency Obstetric Unit as part of its effort to improve the lot of the health facility. The Foundation has also donated a boat ambulance to the District Health Directorate and constructed some CHPS compounds near Jaway Wharf in the District.
Dr Jonathan Mensah, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the donation would reduce the number of neo-natal deaths recorded at the Half-Assini Government Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He said the Unit which catered for sick babies under one month usually records high rates of neonatal cases due to the influx of sick babies from neighbouring Cote D' Ivoire.
Dr Mensah said the assistance from the two institutions is quite vital as premature and severely jaundiced babies were hitherto referred to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital for treatment. He said, prior to the donation, in some circumstances premature babies were wrapped in many sheets and placed in boxes with warm sachet water besides them to keep them warm, while severely jaundiced babies were exposed to early morning sun for treatment since there are no incubators and Radiant Wormers.
Dr Mensah expressed his profound gratitude to the donors, particularly Eni-foundation, for their kind gesture.
