The Head of Salary and Terms of Condition Department of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr Benjamin Kobina Osei has told teachers that the implementation of the Single Spine Pay Policy will not completely relieve them from their financial difficulties.
He said the "policy is a process to reward public service workers, by measuring ones job, and not necessarily an increase based on qualifications".
Mr Osei made the call at a meeting of GNAT members from Agona West and Effutu Municipalities, Agona East, Gomoa East and West, Awutu Senya and
Ajumako Districts.
The meeting was held at Winneba on Thursday, and was to educate teachers on the new pay policy.
Mr Osei said the policy is to ensure that public servants are paid based on productivity and performance, to motivate them to perform better.
He said the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, apart from ensuring that the Single Spine is implemented, would also advise government on matters relating to salaries, wages, grading, classification, job analysis and evaluation.
He said the delay in the implementation of the Single Spine for teachers was based on some distortions detected in the mappings submitted.
Mr said GNAT and the Fair Wages and Salary Commission would rectify the anomaly before its implementation.
Mr Osei advised teachers that, embarking on a strike action will not address their grievances and urged them to exercise restraint since the
authorities are working hard to place them unto Single Spine structure.
During an open forum, most of the teachers were not happy with the way government was treating them, saying that, "they were not being treated fairly".
