The misunderstanding between taxi drivers and the police in Winneba that led to the suspension of taxi services was amicably resolved at a meeting in Winneba, on Monday.
The meeting organized on the orders of the Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Nii Ephraim, was attended by officials of the MTTU, executives of the Winneba Branch of GPRTU and the Central Region Union.
At the meeting, the drivers apologized to the public for any inconvenience that their strike action might have caused.
The taxi drivers suspended their operations for eight hours on October 11, accusing the police of extortion and unlawful arrest but the Police denied, saying they were carrying out their legal duties to ensure sanity.
The drivers appealed to the Effutu Municipal Assembly and Winneba District of MTTU to have cordial relations with them and discuss any
intended operations in the interest of Ghanaians instead of indiscriminately arresting drivers.
Nii Ephraim advised drivers in the Municipality to desist from taking the law into their hands when faced with problems.
He said embarking on demonstrations is their constitutional right but they should follow due process.
The MCE advised the drivers to in the future contact his office or the Assembly when they face any difficulties in their operations.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Nana Emmanuel Ofori, the Effutu Municipal MTTU Commander, said the police are always on the road to enforce traffic regulations to ensure sanity on the road.
ASP Ofori said most drivers stop to pick passengers at unauthorized places, adding that, the suspension of the special of operation by MTTU is not license for the drivers to misbehave on the road.
Mr Kwame Kum, Central Region GPRTU chairman, and Nana Obosu II, the Winneba Branch Chairman, thanked the MCE and the MTTU Commander for
resolving the impasses and promised that the drivers would cooperate with the police to ensure peace in the area.
