A one-year-old girl died instantly when, due to excessive downpour, the wall of a room collapsed on a family at Satinde, a farming community in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.
The mother of the child, Felicia Awini, and her other three-year-old child were also injured in the process and were taken to the Zebilla
district hospital for medical attention.
Mr Isaac Afugu, father of the deceased, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency at his residence immediately after the burial of her deceased
daughter, said the incident occurred on Thursday morning at about 0200 hours, when he heard a heavy sound from his wifes room.
He said he rushed to the scene only to see part of the wall of the room broken down and two of her children crying. He said as he attempted to
rescue the family he realized that the last of the two children was motionless.
According to him he shouted to alert his neighbours for help but that could not save his daughter who was already dead.
Mr Afugu indicated that with support from his neighbours they rushed the other two victims to the Zebilla hospital where they are currently
responding to treatment.
When the GNA got to the Sitande community, several people from neighbouring communities had thronged the home of the deceased to express
their condolences to the bereaved family.
A former Chief Executive of the Bawku West District, Mr Sulley Agolisi, who is related to the bereaved family, expressed gratitude to officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the district for the concern they showed during the incident.
Streams, small water bodies and dams in the Bawku West district are full to the brim, while many others are overflowing their banks.
The road network especially from Bolgatana, the regional capital through to some parts of the Talensi-Nabdam and Bawku West districts are rapidly deteriorating with potholes enlarging by the day, as the rains continue to fall.
