A porter of the Ghana Oil Palm Development Company (GOPDC), who after stealing some palm fruit bunches from the company's plantation went on to steal from another oil palm farm, was on Thursday fined GHC 240 by the Kade District Magistrate Court.
In default Kojo Asumeng who pleaded guilty will go to prison for nine months in hard labour.
Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Ambrose Akpablie told the court that on August 13 Asumeng, who had been able to "smuggle" a few bunches of palm fruits from the GOPDC, was heading to his house at Kwae.
However, he decided to enter an oil palm farm belonging to Opanin Owusu Asare, close to his house and started harvesting his palm fruits.
The prosecutor said Opanin Asare's friend, one Daniel Gallo who was passing by, saw Asumeng and asked him who granted him permission to harvest the fruits.
Asumeng replied that he needed the palm fruits to add to what he already had and the witness ordered him to stop what he was doing but he ignored him.
The prosecutor said the witness called Opanin Asare on cellphone and informed him of what Asumeng was doing and left for his farm.
He rushed to his farm and saw that palm fruits valued about GHC 40 had been harvested.
The prosecutor said a report was made to the police and Asumeng was arrested.
