Sene District branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has called on Government to rehabilitate roads in the area to facilitate the carting of stockpiles of foodstuff to the marker centers.
Mr Yusif Saani, the Chairman of the Union, told Ghana News Agency at Kwame-Danso on Friday that cargo truck drivers were withdrawing their
services due to the bad nature of the roads, compounded by the recent heavy rains in the area.
My brother, the situation is not healthy, given the large quantity of yams, maize, rice, beans and fish produced in the district, he said.
Mr. Saani said that unless Government took immediate steps to repair the roads, agriculture activities would be affected and aggravate the plight of farmers in the district.
He cited that an average of 10 cargo trucks fully loaded with foodstuff used to leave Kwame-Danso to the southern parts of Ghana on every market day but it had dropped to two trucks.
Mr Dominic Napare, the District Chief Executive, confirmed the bad sate of the roads to GNA and said Government was taking steps to solve the problem.
He said the Atebubu-Kwadwokrom road had been awarded on contract and expressed the confidence that the contractors would soon start work on the
project.
