Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Eastern Regional Minister, has called on the regional Peace and Advisory Council (ERPAC), to focus on the many chieftaincy conflicts in the area to restore peace.
According to him, chieftaincy conflicts in the region were becoming a source of worry to the Regional Security Council since they pose a threat to peace and stability.
He mentioned Suhyen in the New Juaben and Nkronso in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Areas as specific places where the ERPAC should focus its
attention to mediate for peace to prevail.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo made the call when members of the council called on him to thank him for the confidence reposed in them.
He said apart from the chieftaincy conflicts there were indications that the intra-faith Muslim conflicts that threatened security sometime ago in the region was rearing its head and called for the ERPAC's intervention.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the government recognized the need for peace to facilitate its Better Ghana agenda hence the support to the peace councils across the country to mediate in conflict situations.
He urged the members to exhibit neutrality and a high sense of maturity in the discharge of their duties to justify the trust and confidence reposed
in them.
The regional minister reiterated that although the peace council was an independent body, it should not hesitate to call on him for guidance or the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), in times of need.
The Reverend Dr JOY Mante, the Akuapem Presbytery Chairman, and the chairman of the ERPAC, who led the delegation, thanked the regional minister and the RCC on behalf of members for selecting them to that high office of mediation.
He promised that they would work assiduously to maintain peace in the region for development to thrive.
