A Cape Coast High Court, presided by Justice Alhaji Mohammed Mustapha, has sentenced a 32 year old man to 15 years imprisonment for manslaughter.
Kwame Enu 32, a farmer and a resident of Kankanbom, near Saltpond, in the Central Region, pleaded guilty to murder but his charge was changed to manslaughter by the seven member jury, who sat on the case.
Justice Mustapha on passing judgment said the sentence would serve as a lesson for Enu.
The Principal State Attorney, Mrs. Hannah Taylor, presenting the facts, said the deceased, Ekow Doughan and Enu, were friends who lived in the same
community at Kankanbom.
She said on August 31, 2007, Ekow visited Kwame in his house but found him asleep and decided to wake him up so they could eat some food he (Ekow) had
bought from the roadside.
Mrs Taylor said Enu became infuriated as soon as he woke up and spat in the face of Doughan, who got so shocked with his friend's behaviour.
In the process of inquiring the reason for his action, Enu gave him a hefty blow which degenerated into a serious fight.
She said neighbours around separated them and took Doughan away to his house but he insisted that he had left the food he bought in Enu's house and
needed to go back for it.
Mrs Taylor said unknowingly to him, Enu had ambushed him on the way, and as soon as he saw Doughan he stabbed him first in the chest and then other parts of his body with a sharp knife.
She said Doughan was rushed to the Saltpond Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Enu was charged with manslaughter after the return of the verdict of the jury.
