A deer calf found in the premises of an open-jail at Nettukaltheri near here has been rescued by wildlife staff.
The 15-day-old calf, which had turned weak due to lack of food was spotted near the cattle shed of the prison last week, the wildlife warden Jyothi said.
"The calf was spotted by prisoners of the open jail.
Efforts by inmates to feed the calf had failed and they informed the wildlife department," she said.
"The deer is being kept at the forest building near the Marakunnam deer park in the region," she added.
The animal is under direct care of veterinary doctor Sunil. Apart from grass, the deer was fed with cattlefeed and milk.
It would be released in the park later, wildlife officials said.
