Breaking yet another male bastion and proving that magic is not an exclusive preserve of men, women magicians in India are planning to organise the world's first Convention of Women Magicians on May 30.
Titled as 'Maya 2010', the event will be held in southern Indian state Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram and likely to be attended by around 150 women magicians from different parts
of the world apart, including female magicians of India.
Hosts Kerala would be represented by 20 participants, including a 12-year-old school student.
The main highlight of the event would be the presence of woman magician Luna Shimada of the US, the organisers told PTI.
Women were just assistants of male performers in magic shows before. But, as in many other fields, women have developed their capabilities and started performing on their own, magician Gopinath Muthukad, the brain behind the setting up of a Magic Academy at Thiruvanathapuram, said.
However, very few of them take it up as a profession, he said adding that the Academy, which started in 1996, offers various courses for beginners.
"Our objective is to bring more women into the field of magic. Women can perform better and are more flexible," he said adding that those who are invited for women magic convention can attract women performers.
Magician Maneka Sorcar, daughter of noted magician P C Sorcar (Junior), Kaized Bhumgara, an air hostess from Mumbai, along with her two daughters Pearl (20) and Zenia (12) are
among some of the prominent performers invited, organisers of the convention said.
