Alhaji Hamidu Mahama, Western Regional Police Commander, at the weekend, cautioned chiefs, who disturb the public peace in the region, that such acts would not be allowed.
"The Regional Police Command is in firm control of the security situation in the region and will do all in its power to ensure peace in the region", he said.
The Regional Police Commander was speaking at the 2009 Annual get-together of officers and men of the command at Takoradi.
He noted that chieftaincy disputes were "rearing its ugly head in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis," and that, any faction "that attempts to destroy the peace in the region would face the full rigours of the law".
Alhaji Mahama pointed out that, the duty of the police was to maintain law and order and also to protect the interest of the people of the region and the nation as a whole.
Ms Betty Bosomtwi-Sam, Deputy Western Regional Minister, commended the Western Police command for its outstanding performance, in reducing crime in the region in 2009.
She said it was sad to see some chiefs in the region loosing their respect as a result litigations and other issues.
"If any chief is found disturbing the peace that the region is enjoying, he would not be spared", Ms Bosomtwi-sam cautioned.
She also alleged that some chiefs have a hand in illegal mining operations in the mining areas.
"Some Chiefs who have been given the mandate to govern the people are not doing so", and urged the police "to apply the law without fear or favour, if any chief is caught flouting the law", Ms Bosomtwi-Sam said.
She said, since the discovery of oil in the region, there has been an influx of people to the area, with some of them doing genuine business, while others indulge in vices such a fraud, armed robbery and prostitution, among others.
Ms Bosomtwi-Sam,therefore, urged the security agencies "to beef up their security to ensure peace in the region".
