With effect from this year, Koforidua Regional Hospital would train midwives and student midwives the manual technique of removing placenta and vacuum delivery.
The training and other basic techniques in obstetrics and gynecology which are not taught in midwifery schools are expected to equip the midwives to help reduce maternal mortality.
Dr Kwame Anim-Boamah, Director of the Regional Hospital, made this known at the Annual Review Meeting of the hospital over the weekend.
He called on the staff of the hospital to treat every patient who visits the hospital as a Very Important Person as part of efforts of turning the hospital into a centre of excellence.
Dr Boamah said this year, the hospital would continue to seek more innovative ways of reducing congestion at the Out Patients Department of the hospital.
Dr Cadmill Newton, Deputy Director of the hospital, said the health facility would set up a committee to motivate and coordinate research at the various departments to support the training of staff.
The Medical Specialist of the hospital, Dr James Appiah-Kussi, urged senior nurses of the facility to include seminars and workshops in the training of junior and student nurses to help raise their level of competence.
