Three persons have been rounded up by the Aflao Police in connection with the death in Police cells of a man they handed over to the Police as a robbery suspect on December 26, last year.
They are Awudu Ali, 32, Daminu Mohammed, 30 and Ibrahim Issifu, 27.
The deceased was named as Eklu Ankrah, 32, unemployed.
A Police source told the Ghana News Agency that at about 0500 hours on December 26, last year, a mob led by the three persons brought the deceased to the Police station claiming he was a robbery suspect they arrested at Aflao Zongo.
The group alleged that following persistent robberies in the Zongo, the youth there took to night patrols in the area during which the deceased was spotted at about 0300 hours on December 26, seated on a fence wall of a house but two others suspected to be his accomplices who were then inside the compound fled while firing gun shots.
The source said the group claimed one Bintu Masawudu, wife of Ali identified the late Ankrah as one of the persons among a group of armed men who broke into her house a week earlier and demanded that she surrendered cash in the house or be raped.
The Police source said the late Ankrah and the three suspects who brought him to the Police Station were interrogated and Ankrah who appeared fit except for some minor scratches on both chins was placed in custody.
At about 0600 hours the same day, the Police officer taking over the charge room duties found Ankrah motionless and had him rushed to the Ketu South District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the Police source said the post mortem report indicated that Ankrah was severely assaulted.
Ali, Mohammed and Issifu have since been handed over to the Regional Police Command in Ho for further investigations and Ankrah’s body has since been buried.
