Local officials in Copenhagen have proposed naming one of the capital's squares after the late gay activist Axel Axgil.
Axgil and his partner Eigil Eskildsen were the first same-sex couple to register a same-sex union when Denmark became the first country to legally recognize such unions, in 1989. The couple were engaged in 1950.
Axgil died at the age of 96 in October 2011.
"I hope that naming a place after Axel Axgil can inspire all minorities to fight for their rights and remind the majority about the importance of openness," Afyfer Baykal, city councilor in charge of technical and environment issues, said Wednesday.
Axgil was co-founder of the Association of 1948, the Scandinavian country's first gay rights organization. A decade later it changed its name to the Danish National Association of Gays and Lesbians.
Final approval of the name change to the square is due before the summer.
