Spotify has announced its Detty December hub to celebrate the cultural moment built around Ghana's end-of-year party calendar. The streaming leader is elevating the annual experience with new playlists, specially curated for the season, as well as takeovers by popular Afrobeats DJs. As Afrobeats is exported globally, Detty December has created its own mini-culture for fans looking to experience the genre from the source.
"Spotify's Detty December hub reflects our support for this cultural moment, creating a vibe that's familiar to Detty December regulars and newbies alike," says Spotify's West Africa Editor, Benewaah Boateng.
To celebrate, Spotify is unveiling three new playlists:
The Best of Detty December playlist showcases the top tracks that have defined Detty December since 2016
The Recovery playlist features songs to help you unwind and chill on the post-club ride home
The NXT playlist, going LIVE in January 2023, will feature local songs most likely to crossover to international audiences
The Detty December hub also features takeovers by Ghanaian Afrobeats DJs, Eff the DJ, Kojo Manuel as well as their diaspora brother, Blaq Pages.
Speaking on the impact of Detty December, Eff The DJ says "Year in and year out, Detty December expands Africa's music scene positively. We've seen its effects from sounds being produced and adapted, to the collaborations, the investment and the concert lineups. A space has been created for all kinds of people, whatever music they enjoy."
