MTN Ghana, through its subsidiary Mobile Money Limited, has announced a raft of new anti-fraud measures aimed at strengthening the security of Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem.
The announcements were made at MTN’s annual Partners’ Awards Ceremony, which brought together agents, merchants, technology partners and partner banks, while placing strong emphasis on protecting customers and sanitising the MoMo network.
Two hundred (200) outstanding MoMo partners from the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo and Bono East regions were honoured at the ceremony.
Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager for MTN Ghana’s Northern Sector, addressing the media after the event, said the company was intensifying efforts to combat fraud through enhanced systems, closer collaboration with security agencies and stricter controls across its operations.
He reminded customers that the only official MTN customer care number is 0244-300000 and cautioned subscribers never to disclose their MoMo PINs to anyone, regardless of claims made by callers.
“The milestone achieved by Mobile Money Limited are rooted in strong collaboration, mutual trust and unwavering dedication,” Mr. Mingle stated.
Mr. Abdul-Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager for Commercial Mobile Money, said as part of concrete actions against fraud, there was going to be a nationwide re-registration exercise for all MoMo agents.
He explained that the exercise was necessitated by the detection of “ghost” identities and attempts by previously blacklisted individuals to re-enter the system using aliases.
The re-registration, he said, would help purge the network of fraudulent actors and ensure that only verified and compliant agents continue to operate.
In another major security-focused reform, MTN MoMo will overhaul its cash-out process from 2026 to better protect customer privacy.
Mr. Rufai explained that the new system will rely on QR codes and unique Agent IDs, eliminating the need for customers to mention their phone numbers aloud at agent points, a practice often exploited by fraudsters through “shoulder surfing.”
MTN honoured 200 partners from Ghana’s middle belt for their contributions to the MoMo ecosystem.
Some award categories were announced on stage as a surprise, adding excitement to the ceremony.
Overall best performers received GH?20,000, while other category winners received GH?5,000, plaques and citations.
Mr. Mingle described the awardees as the backbone of MTN MoMo’s success and noted that their dedication had been critical to the platform’s growth and sustainability.
He also disclosed that Mobile Money Limited was collaborating with the Government of Ghana to support local fintech startups as part of efforts to drive innovation and strengthen the digital economy.
Award recipients expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying it motivated them to uphold high service standards while supporting financial inclusion in their communities.
