While prices of items such as clothing and shoes keep falling, which is good news for consumers, it's not so good for retailers that are being forced to fight battles on multiple fronts.
Rachel Lunn from the British Retail Consortium tells Today that the market is "incredibly competitive" and chains have had to cut prices just to get consumers through the door.
While consumer demand remains relatively weak, prices are likely to continue falling – compounding the misery for retailers, she says.
The whole taxation burden on the retail sector needs consideration, Ms Lunn argues, given its overall contribution to the economy.
