Ferrari secured a second successive win this past weekend, as Carlos Sainz Jnr. Triumphed from pole position at the Mexico City Grand Prix, following on from teammate Charles Leclerc's victory at the United States GP the week before.
Sainz claimed a dominant win ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, with Leclerc in third and the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell completing the top five. Reigning world champion and Drivers' title leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull could only manage sixth place – this included being hit by two 10-second penalties for overly aggressive defence against his main championship rival, Norris.
Verstappen holds a 47-point lead over Norris at the top of the standings and looks likely to go on and win a fourth straight title – despite the Red Bull having fallen behind in pace. In terms of the Constructors' Championship, McLaren are just 29 points ahead of Ferrari at the top of the standings, with Red Bull a further 25 points back in third.
"I think this was another step from Austin,” said Norris in regards to his on-track battles with Verstappen. “I don’t necessarily think any of us should have had a penalty in Austin. I am not saying Max should have had one, me not, I don’t think that’s the case. Here, I think it was a lot more clear for different reasons.
“I don’t need to say them. I respect Max a lot in what he does, how he races, all of these things. I look forward to having good battles with him. I want to have them. It makes me smile and what I love about racing. It’s why I do it in a way. Things like today, it’s a bit too far. We both could have been out of the race and I just think that’s not how you should race. Maybe some will disagree and say I am wrong.
“I think today was a step too far. I think Max will know that, I hope, and then we can go ahead to have some more clean, fair battles because I look forward to them."
Sainz, meanwhile, was delighted to win in Mexico – the first time in his career he has won two races in a single season – and he will be hungry for more at Brazil.
"I really wanted to win his one," admitted the Spaniard. "I needed it for myself. I said I wanted one more win for Ferrari and to do it here with this mega crowd is incredible. Now four races left, I want to enjoy it as much as possible. If anyone comes, I will go for it."
