The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) in the Greater Accra Region will take all the necessary administrative and legal steps to evict, demolish, and prosecute people who trespass on public lands in the municipality, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Alhaji Ibrahim Fusseini Faila, has said.
He gave the warning at a press conference after a landmark ruling by the Adentan High Court, which affirmed LaNMMA as having lawful ownership and administrative authority over a 4.4-acre parcel of land that formerly housed the assembly's offices at Madina Zango junction.
“This judgment not only validates the assembly’s position, but also aligns with the broader government policy to reclaim all stolen or misappropriated state lands in the municipality,” Mr Faila said.
He said the court also dismissed all counterclaims brought against the assembly by Decorbuild Ltd regarding the land which was covered by Executive Instrument (E.I.21).
Mr Fusseini said the government under President John Mahama is committed to tackling the illegal encroachment of state lands, including measures such as a comprehensive audit of state lands allocated between 2017 and 2024.
The government also has the mandate to reverse illegal transactions and suspend all unauthorised sales, leases, and grants of public lands.
The Ghana Police Service and the Lands Commission are empowered to remove unauthorised occupants, demolish illegal structures, enforce new oversight and transparency requirements, digitise land records, and require presidential approval for significant land transactions.
The MCE stated that these measures are part of a broader national effort to safeguard public assets and ensure accountability.
Mr Faila, therefore, warned individuals or groups currently occupying, developing, selling or attempting to take possession of state lands within the municipality to stop immediately.
He called on the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Madina Divisional Command, to support the enforcement of the court ruling and ensure that the integrity of state lands within the municipality was maintained.
Mr Faila said the assembly would actively engage with the Lands Commission in its audit process, and also coordinate enforcement efforts to secure the old assembly office land and other state lands under attack by illegal developers, including Redco flats land and the VRA car park.
