New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has donated critical navigation equipment to the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC) at the Adawso ferry station in the Eastern Region, in response to safety concerns raised by local officials.
The gesture followed a distress call from VLTC station officers about the growing risk faced by passengers and goods ferried across the Volta River between Adawso in the Kwahu West District and Ekye in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District.
The donation was made during a brief ceremony held aboard the pontoon that serves as the main mode of transport between the two communities.
Dr Acheampong expressed deep concern over the lack of basic safety tools, describing the situation as “scary and alarming.”
“When Station Officer Isaac Souzey came to me with this request, I was alarmed. He described a terrible situation that posed great danger to human lives and goods crossing the Volta River. I knew I had to respond. Today, I am here to honour a promise I made to the workers and all who rely on this pontoon,” he stated.
He urged the pontoon’s Captain, Osafo Kennedy, the Station Officer, and all VLTC staff to take good care of the donated equipment to ensure it serves its purpose of protecting lives and property.
Officials of the Volta Lake Transport Company expressed appreciation for the intervention, noting that the equipment would significantly enhance navigation, improve safety standards and reduce risks associated with ferry operations on the lake.
The donation is seen as a crucial boost to the VLTC’s operations, particularly as the company continues to play a vital role in facilitating transportation, trade and connectivity across communities within the Afram Plains area.
