The chiefs and elders of the Oguaa Traditional Council have offered traditional prayers for the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, invoking the blessings and good health of the Almighty God for a daughter of their land.
They also prayed for the President, John Dramani Mahama, and the country at large, inviting the protection, prosperity and guidance of God for the nation, the government and its leader.
Led by the Oguaamanhen, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, the chiefs and elders called for ancestral and divine protection for the country and the leaders, as well as the assurance of peace and prosperity for the country.
The Vice-President was also awarded the Osabarimba Royal Award accompanied by a shield and a citation.
She was also presented with kente, a traditional cloth, a pair of traditional slippers, popularly known as ‘ahenma mpaboa,’ and beads.
The traditional council offered the prayers and pronounced the well-wishes when the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, paid a courtesy visit on the Oguaamanhen at the Emintsimadze Palace in Cape Coast, the official seat of the paramount chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area.
The visit was to express her appreciation to the chiefs and people for their support that led her to become Ghana’s first female Vice-President.
The courtesy call was also to build momentum for PANAFEST 2025, which climaxes in Cape Coast today.
As a proud daughter of the Central Region and former first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, her visit carried personal and cultural significance, reinforcing her roots and commitment to her hometown.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was accompanied by some staff of her office, regional leaders, Regional Chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of Cape Coast North and South, other party executive and supporters in the Central Region.
The atmosphere was festive and celebratory, marked by cheers, traditional appellations, while party members sang the anthem as she entered the palace.
Present were the Policy Advisor at the Office of the Vice-President, Dr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the Presidential Staffer and Special Aide to the Vice-President, Prof. Theresah Ennim; the Head of Administration, Alberta Graham; the Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere, and the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Cape Coast, George Justice Arthur.
Traditional reception
The Oguamanhen, surrounded by members of his council, commended the Vice-President for the humility of returning to her roots to show appreciation and honour the chiefs and elders of the Oguaa paramountcy.
Osabarimba Kwesi Atta also recognised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s selfless service and immense contributions to the country.
He described her as a proud daughter of the land and reaffirmed the support of the Oguaa Traditional Area for her leadership.
The Vice-President thanked the people of Oguaa and the Central Region, saying “I thank you for the love, prayers and respect you have always shown me”.
She added: “I am a mother for you and for all. I know your prayers are with me, and I feel your support every day as I work to serve this nation. Your prayers have carried me this far, and I know they will continue to guide me.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the critical role traditional authorities played in ensuring peace and development, and said the government remained committed to working hand in hand with the Oguaa Traditional Council to bring progress to the Central Region.
The Vice-President also called for continued collaboration between traditional authorities and the government to advance national development.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that her position as Vice-President was not just a personal achievement but a shared victory for all women and the people of Ghana.
Youth
To the youth, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang charged them to avoid behaviours that could harm themselves, the country or their communities.
“I appeal to you to desist from any behaviour that will not be good for this country or for yourselves. We all have a role to play in ensuring that Ghana grows stronger and remains united,” she stated.
