Sunyani Technical University has admitted 4,230 fresh students for the 2025/2026 academic year during its 30th matriculation ceremony.
The Vice-Chancellor, Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, said the university issued admission letters to 7,441 applicants, out of which 4,230, representing 56.8 per cent, accepted the offer and enrolled.
Out of the total enrolment, 2,672 students, representing 63.2 per cent, are males, while 1,558 students, representing 36.8 per cent, are females.
Breaking down the enrolment figures, Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah said, “117 students (2.8%) enrolled in graduate programmes, 3,582 students (84.7%) enrolled in bachelor’s degree programmes, and 531 students (12.5%) enrolled in HND and diploma programmes.”
He added that in terms of academic disciplines, “3,699 students (87.4%) enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and TVET programmes, while 531 students (12.7%) enrolled in Business and Administration programmes.”
Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah noted that the figures show the university has met the national 60:40 policy requirement that prioritises Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programmes in technical universities.
He explained that the current intake represents a 0.2 per cent increase compared to last year’s enrolment of 4,222 students.
The Vice-Chancellor said the development underscores the need for the university to intensify efforts to improve its global visibility and attract more students, particularly into newly introduced science, engineering and TVET programmes.
He disclosed that the university currently runs 92 accredited academic programmes, including 13 Master of Technology programmes, 31 bachelor’s degree programmes, 24 Higher National Diploma programmes, five diploma programmes and 20 non-tertiary TVET craft programmes.
Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah encouraged prospective students locally and internationally to take advantage of the institution’s industry-focused programmes.
He said the programmes are designed to equip students with technical, professional and entrepreneurial skills that will make them employable or capable of establishing their own businesses.
The Vice-Chancellor also announced that the university will host the 2027 Ghana Technical Universities Sports Association Games and urged students with talents in football, athletics, basketball and volleyball to register with the university’s sports unit.
On campus security, Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah said management has strengthened safety measures through the establishment of a campus police post, improved lighting systems, enhanced security patrols and the installation of additional CCTV cameras across key areas of the campus.
He advised students to remain vigilant and take personal security seriously.
“Students should avoid walking alone at night and promptly report suspicious activities to the university authorities,” he said.
Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah further urged the students to remain disciplined and focused on their studies, warning that anti-social behaviours such as drug abuse, examination malpractice, robbery and sexual harassment would attract strict disciplinary action.
“Such misconduct will attract sanctions including possible dismissal or prosecution,” he cautioned.
He also encouraged the students to familiarise themselves with the university’s rules and regulations as outlined in the students’ handbook.
Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah concluded by welcoming the fresh students and urged them to work hard, demonstrate good character and serve as worthy ambassadors of the university throughout their academic journey.
