THE REVENANTS - A SOLO EXHIBITION BY DIMITRI FAGBOHOUN
The Revenants, a new contemporary art exhibition sponsored by Mr Adetoye Aguessy, will open at The Mix Art Gallery, in Accra on Friday 12 December 2025, bringing Beninese-Ukrainian-French artist, Dimitri Fagbohoun’s perspectives to challenge long-held misconceptions surrounding Vodun.
The Revenants presents a powerful exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Dimitri Fagbohoun, whose work confronts identity, memory, and the shifting boundaries between personal history and collective heritage.
Based in France, Fagbohoun’s plural identity is central to his practice. His work, spanning sculpture, photography, and installation examines the tensions between geography, heritage, and belonging. Through this lens, he challenges inherited cultural models and opens space for new interpretations.
In The Revenants, Fagbohoun continues his exploration of the artistic, historical, and spiritual. His pieces emerge as propositions, inviting viewers to rethink the frameworks through which identity and ancestral knowledge are understood.
The exhibition invites audiences to question their relationship with the Diaspora, History and endogenous belief systems.
A Call to Unlearn
The Curator, Essé Dabla-Attikpo frames the exhibition with a provocative premise: “Vodun is not fixed, tame, or easily understood, it demands that we unlearn what we thought we knew.”
With this approach, the exhibition challenges audiences, collectors, and institutions to re-evaluate inherited assumptions and to enter a dialogue with a knowledge system long overdue for nuanced global engagement.
Exhibition Highlights
Over 20 Newly Commissioned Works produced specifically for the exhibition
Immersive Installations engaging materiality, and spatial storytelling
About the Artist
Dimitri Fagbohoun was born in 1972 from a Beninese father and an Ukrainian mother, in Cotonou, Benin. Being raised in Cameroon before settling in France, where he lives and works now, the thematics and questions he raises are reflecting his course and history, between geographic and artistic borders. His work is then inseparable from his own life experience and of his plural identity.
Protean, by the heterogeneous forms he uses, sculpture, photography, installation, he expresses a relationship to identity and personal history within which his writing is interrogating the models that constitute them. From this tension results in the emerging of other visions and new forms.
