The meeting forms part of NHIA’s broader stakeholder engagement strategy aimed at driving reforms and improving the efficiency of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
During the visit, Dr. Bampoe reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the implementation of key government initiatives such as Mahama Cares and the Free Primary Healthcare programme.
He emphasized the Authority’s reform agenda, which includes eliminating co-payments, curbing fraudulent claims, and ensuring the sustainability of the NHIS.

“The road to Universal Health Coverage requires robust partnerships at all levels of government. The Volta Region remains critical in our nationwide efforts to build a more responsive and equitable health insurance system,” Dr. Bampoe stated.

Dr. Bampoe assured the Regional Minister of the Authority’s readiness to complete critical projects in the region and further enhance service delivery. He underscored the NHIA’s commitment to strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring that the Scheme remains accessible and efficient for all Ghanaians.

In response, Mr Gunu expressed dedicated support for the NHIA’s initiatives and pledged the backing of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC).
He commended the leadership of the NHIA for its proactive reforms and lauded the performance of the Regional Director, Ms. Susana Chobber, for her effective leadership in enhancing Scheme operations within the region.

“The NHIS remains a cornerstone of the government’s social protection agenda. We at the VRCC are committed to working with NHIA to ensure its success, especially as efforts to reset and improve healthcare delivery continue nationwide,” the Minister said.

He further expressed optimism that ongoing government budgetary commitments would ensure timely claims payments and improve the quality of healthcare delivery across the country.

The NHIA delegation included senior officials such as Dr. Lydia Anaab-Bisi, Acting Director of Quality Assurance; Mr. Oswald Essuah-Mensah, Acting Director of Corporate Affairs; Ms. Mariam Musah, Deputy Director of Strategic Health Purchasing; Ms. Oforiwa Portuphy, Acting Deputy Director of the Claims Processing Centre; Mr. Edmund Nana Osei Owusu, Senior Manager for Human Resource and Administration; and Mrs. Mercy Awuah Wireduwaa, Acting Senior Manager for Membership and Regional Operations.

The visit is expected to pave the way for stronger inter-agency collaboration and improved healthcare outcomes for residents of the Volta Region. As the NHIA accelerates its reforms and stakeholder engagement across the country, it aims to build a health insurance scheme that is more transparent, inclusive, and aligned with the health needs of Ghanaians.
