The Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing a robust sea defence system along the coast of the Volta Region, describing it as a top priority in the administration’s development agenda.
He acknowledged the persistent challenges caused by tidal waves and coastal erosion and gave an assurance that the government would, as a matter of urgency, provide the needed response to resolve the challenge which has become a serious threat.
Speaking during a Dzita Easter Homecoming festival at Keta last Saturday, the Chief of Staff, on behalf of the Vice-President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, emphasised that both the sea defence project and the poor state of roads witnessed en route to Anloga were at the forefront of the government’s development priorities.
Addressing the critical needs of coastal communities, Mr Segbefia said the government was fully aware of the dire conditions faced by the residents, and “we have heard your requests, and we were already aware of many of them before arriving. Let me assure you; they will not be forgotten,” he said.
The events formed part of the Vice-President’s planned tour to some communities in the Keta and Anlo areas in the Volta Region, namely Alakple, Dzita, and Kedzie.
Mr Segbefia was accompanied by the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu; the Vice-President’s Policy Advisor on Finance, Mansa Amoa Awuah; the Vice President’s Press Secretary, Maame Ama Pratt, and the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Anloga, Sandra Seyram Kpedor.
There were separate durbars at the three communities as part of the Easter festivities, and the occasions were also used to raise funds to support ongoing projects in the communities.
The events brought together chiefs, community members, youth groups, and dignitaries from the local and national levels in a colourful display of culture, unity, and shared commitment to the growth of the communities.
Addressing concerns about the absence of the Vice-President, Mr Segbefia said all was well and that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang would soon return to her duties.
He, on behalf of the Vice-President, thanked the people of the Volta Region for their long-standing loyalty and support, especially during the 2024 elections.
“On the instructions of the Vice-President, I also wish to express our deepest gratitude to the people of the Volta Region.
Your sacrifices and loyalty will not be forgotten,” he said.
The durbar organised by the Alakple Development Association in the Anloga Constituency was to raise GH¢200,000 for the construction of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound and to support the improvement of their road infrastructure.
At the Kedzie Easter gathering, Mr Segbefia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to technical education and tourism development in the region.
He revealed that the Vice-President had long intended to personally attend the event, particularly on the issue of setting up a hostel and also a pavilion for the technical school.
“We will do everything possible to ensure that we take account of all the requests and requirements that have been made over the years and, more importantly, recently,” he assured.
