The Ghana Youth Manifesto Coalition (GYMC) yesterday - 11-03-2025 concluded a crucial engagement with the National Youth Authority (NYA), led by CEO Osman Abdullai Ayariga, alongside key NYA leadership including Deputy CEO Jacob Adongo Atule and Director of Administration Emmanuel Anaman Mensah. The meeting, focused on aligning youth priorities with NYA’s mandate, saw the Coalition present a comprehensive overview of critical issues, with a strong emphasis on good governance, justice, and accountability.
The GYMC delegation highlighted the three paramount youth priorities identified through extensive consultations: employment, education, and good governance and accountability. These core areas formed the basis of the discussion, with the Coalition urging the NYA to take concrete steps to address the challenges faced by young Ghanaians.
A significant point of contention was the need for a comprehensive review of the 1992 Constitution to ensure its relevance to the youth. The Coalition stressed the importance of addressing the age of participation in governance and the prohibitive costs associated with political engagement, advocating for a more inclusive and accessible system for young people.
One of the most pressing demands from the GYMC was the establishment of the Ghana Youth Federation. The CEO acknowledged that work was underway and plans were advanced to establish an interim leadership to spearhead this crucial initiative. However, the Coalition expressed disappointment at the CEO’s inability to provide a specific timeline for its realization, with the response being that “work is far advanced” but no firm dates could be given. The GYMC emphasized the urgency of this federation in providing a unified voice for Ghanaian youth.
The Coalition also presented alarming data from the Ghana Youth Manifesto Survey Report, revealing a significant disconnect between the NYA and its target demographic. Over 66% of young people surveyed were unaware of the NYA’s existence, and over 70% considered the NYA either slightly effective or not effective. This data underscored the urgent need for the NYA to improve its outreach and engagement strategies.
Further discussions covered a range of other critical issues, with the Coalition advocating for greater transparency, accountability, and youth participation in decision-making processes.
In response, CEO Osman Abdullai Ayariga promised to reach out to the GYMC for partnership and collaboration on the issues raised. He acknowledged the concerns presented and committed to working towards addressing the challenges facing Ghanaian youth.
The GYMC, while welcoming the CEO’s commitment, reiterated the need for concrete action and measurable outcomes. The Coalition emphasized that the engagement was just the beginning of an ongoing dialogue and that they would continue to hold the NYA accountable for its promises.
This engagement marks a significant step in the GYMC’s efforts to ensure that youth priorities are at the forefront of national development. The Coalition remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for a brighter future for Ghanaian youth, demanding tangible results from the NYA and other relevant stakeholders.
