THE President, John Dramani Mahama, will open a major education review conference by mid-February 2025, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced.
“I am happy to announce that in mid-February President John Dramani Mahama will open a major education review conference to examine the state and future of education in Ghana,” he told journalists at a press conference in Accra.
The education review conference was one of the campaign promises made by President Mahama during the electioneering campaign leading up to the general election in December 2024.
Mr Iddrisu added that the review conference would also make appropriate recommendations to improve the provision of education in Ghana in order to achieve equity and quality as “We prepare to produce competitive human capital for our country.”
The minister announced this at a press conference to mark this year’s International Day of Education on the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”
The day is observed annually on January 24 which was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 3, 2018, through resolution 73/25.
The maiden edition was observed on January 24, 2019.
Mr Iddrisu said the Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to the transformative power of education as a cornerstone for individual and societal progress.
“This year’s theme highlights the profound influence of AI in reshaping education, offering unparalleled opportunities to personalise learning, automate tasks and expand access to most underserved communities.
“However, these advancements also demand deliberate investments in critical infrastructure, including reliable electricity, internet connectivity and safe, inclusive learning environments,” Mr Iddrisu explained.
Speaking on the observation of the day, the minister said, “As we embrace the promise of AI, we remain mindful of the global challenges that persist — millions of people are still excluded from the right to education due to poverty, conflict, gender disparities, geographic isolation and inadequate infrastructure.”
Touching on the theme, Mr Iddrisu said AI presented a unique opportunity to bridge those gaps by delivering high-quality education to remote areas and fostering inclusivity through adaptive technologies that respond to diverse learning needs.
