The General Overseer of the Evangelical Church of Ghana (ECG), Rev Maxwell K.K. Liwangol, has called on Ghanaians to set aside the outcome of the December 7, 2024, elections and rally around the national flag as the country transitions from one democratic government to another.
He stated that with the election season concluded and a new president elected to lead the nation for the next four years, citizens must abandon unnecessary partisanship and support policies aimed at fostering national development.
While commending political parties and politicians for maintaining relative peace during the elections, he stressed the importance of consolidating these gains by supporting the incoming administration in establishing structures for effective governance.
“In the struggle for political power, there will be acrimonious moments; but when the masses have decided on who to be their President and Members of Parliament (MPs), the best thing to do as a responsible citizen is to put national interest first,” he emphasised.
Watchnight service
Speaking at the 31st December Watchnight Service at the Old Fadama branch of the Evangelical Church of Ghana (ECG), Rev Liwangol warned that anyone whose actions aim to disrupt the country’s peace following the elections would be regarded as an enemy of the state.
The service, held under the theme "Our God Delivers and Rescues," drew hundreds of worshippers, including regular congregants and ceremonial Christians, who gathered to thank God for His provisions throughout the year and seek His guidance for the year ahead.
Dressed predominantly in white, attendees sang and danced with joy, celebrating with songs of praise. When the clock struck midnight, the packed church auditorium erupted in jubilation as worshippers welcomed the New Year with shouts of joy and dancing.
Hope
Rev Liwangol acknowledged that while challenges might arise in 2025, there was hope that God would intervene and bring restoration to the country.
He encouraged Ghanaians, saying, “When we trust in the Lord and prioritise national development issues, we will survive the turbulence.”
He further highlighted the importance of hard work, stating that diligence would lead to abundant blessings from God.
Obedience
The clergyman also urged citizens, especially the youth, to respect leaders and avoid contempt towards those in authority.
He noted, “It is through obedience and respect for authority that Ghanaians can collectively contribute to national development and attract God’s blessings.”
He cautioned against disobedience, stating, “Do not let your disobedience lead you and your society into trouble.”
Rev Liwangol added that the nation’s laws were designed to promote peaceful coexistence and maintain stability, and therefore, it was the duty of all citizens to uphold them.
