Parliament is set to reconvene today, Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), marking its first sitting since the decisive December 7 general elections.

This session follows an official circular from the Speaker’s Office on December 11, confirming the location for the meeting.

Speaker Alban Bagbin, in a prior notice dated December 2, 2024, summoned Parliament to resume its functions, emphasizing the importance of this gathering in light of recent political developments.

2024 Elections: A Pivotal Shift in Parliament

The December 7 elections reshaped Ghana’s political landscape, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a parliamentary majority.

Several high-profile Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah Kubi among others have lost their seats, altering the balance of power in the legislature.

The NDC’s electoral triumph also extended to the presidential race, with John Dramani Mahama emerging victorious against the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaker’s Decision to Postpone Pre-Election Sitting

Before the elections, the Majority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had repeatedly urged Speaker Bagbin to recall Parliament for urgent legislative matters.

However, Speaker Bagbin declined these requests, maintaining that parliamentary activities would remain suspended until after the elections.

This decision sparked debate among lawmakers, with some questioning the timing of the recall and its implications for governance.

Today’s sitting is expected to address critical post-election issues, including the transition to a new administration and discussions on key legislative priorities for the incoming government.
