Most schools around the world are starting to reopen for students to come in and study. This is crucial especially for those kids who are preparing for examinations.
To most parents, this has caused a lot of worry especially knowing that the virus is still around and that a vaccine has not yet been discovered.
For teachers, the concern maybe whether or not students would recall all or at least majority of the things they’ve been taught.
As about now, many of these kids would be ‘brain drain’ that is they may have forgotten what they have learned at school. For those who were engaged in online tuition, majority might not yet get the concept and worst of all would be those students who never had the chance to connect online due to unavailability of internet connections.
These are all big questions to think through.
But as a parent whether you like it all not, you are your child’s best teacher. And as such the best way to teach is by setting good example.
As schools are reopening now and students are going back after a long vacation at home, it is most obvious that your son or daughter might be going through some form of emotional instability.
And this is why it is important to start taking responsibility.
Importance Of Taking Responsibility
Parent’s attitudes towards education can inspire theirs kids and show them how to take charge of their own educational journey.
Parental encouragement and support for learning activities at home combined with parental involvement in schooling is critical to children’s education.
A growing body of research shows that building effective partnerships between parents, families and schools to support children’s learning leads to improved learning outcomes.
Parents are the first and continuing educators of their children.
Beyond educational achievement, parent who takes responsibility give their kids lots of benefits:
1. Better social skills
2. Improved behaviour
3. Better adaptation to school
4. Increased social capital
5. A greater sense of personal competence and efficacy for learning
6. Greater engagement in school work
7. A stronger belief in the importance of education.
How To Start Taking Responsibility
Here are few things you must do to take responsibility;
Oversee child’s activity: From 1st grade to 8th grade, parents can go through the subjects that are being taught and the materials used. Sometimes if they think the material isn’t good, they should mention it to the teacher. So parents have to see what is being taught to the child and foresee the sort of material the child is using. And this is not restricted to academics. Parents can also support their kids for piano classes as part of the band class.
Scheduling: So I’m pretty bad at making weekly/monthly schedules or timetables and my parents, mostly dad, used to taunt me for this. He made proper weekly schedules covering study time, piano practice, badminton practice and of course rest time!
Give constructive criticism: Constructive criticism is pivotal for a child. It helps the child to get on the right track. My mom helps me out a lot on my assignments whenever she feels that it is not up to the mark and she explains to me what I did wrong or how I should have done it. That way I get an idea on how I can improve it.
Parents have to assist them in their child's educational journey. Tuitions and coaching centres can never give you the proper guidance and support that a parent can.
My answer is complete of my personal experience but I know a lot of students who don’t get the proper support I have been lucky to get. I hope some parents may understand the importance of their support from my answer.
Try and make as many conversations with your child daily. It may range from asking them about their friends to what did they study in school. It will make them feel connected to you in a better way.
Talk to them about current events and trending news. Even if the topics are slightly difficult, simplify and explain them. For example, if there are news about elections, talk to them about what democracy is, how elections are conducted in a simple words.
Make them curious. Ask them questions. Stir their curiosity. For example, start a conversation with, ‘Do you know why there are only 28 days in February>?’ or ‘ Who do you think print money’ etc.
Most importantly, don’t kill their curiosity and original thinking capability. Try and answer every question they ask. Take help if needed, but never ever scold and shush them for asking questions. This is how they will develop individual thinking capability.
Get them into reading since early childhood itself. Reading is extremely important for academic success as well as a full proof formula for glorious career. All competitive exams in today’s day and time involve reading comprehension and judging overall personality. It can be only achieved through extensive reading. You can take help of well designed, interactive reading platforms like Nexool, to develop liking for reading in them. Nexool offers variety of books, on interesting topics, with colorful imagery, inbuilt dictionary and interactive sessions. Most importantly it offers parents and teachers a real time data to track, what kids are reading, what are their favorite subjects, where they are facing difficulty etc to improve their reading skills.
Summary
Formal education is called so:
1. because it is dispensed by formally appointed paid teachers in a formally recognized facility made available to the child on payment of fees.
2. because it is limited to the formal syllabus.
3. because periodically, after conducting formal tests, a formal certificate is issued declaring the ward to be educated. This certificate is formally accepted as prima-facie true.
4. because neither the institutes nor the teachers formally assume personal responsibility for the ward's wellbeing.
As you can see, parents thus have a totally different and much bigger role to play in bringing up their children. The informal education that the parents dispense makes the child a good human being. Parents are NATURAL TEACHERS of their children. Normally they are not allowed by the institutions to participate in dispensing formal education.
