The United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) is to spend 64.2 million U.S. dollars on its activities in Nigeria in the next four years under its 6th Country Programme, scheduled to commence in 2009.
The figure was made public in Abuja, capital of Nigeria, during a Stakeholders' Consultative Forum on UNFPA's Country Programme ( CP)of Assistance to Nigeria, according to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday.Of the amount, 29.2 million dollars will come from regular resources and 35 million dollars through co-financing modalities expected from participating states.
Aimed at improving the standard of living of Nigerians, the programme represents UNFPA's sixth round of programme cycle in Nigeria.
The programme will be implemented at the federal level and in 12 states, selected on the basis of socio-demographic indicators and geographical spread. Giving an overview of the programme, UNFPA Assistant Representative Ismaila Sulaiman said the findings and recommendations of the fifth country programme guided the preparation of the sixth programme.
In addition, he explained that the programme was fashioned after national priorities as spelt in the federal and state economic empowerment strategies. The 5th Country Programme commenced in January 2003 and ended in December 2007.
