The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has announced plans to step up public sensitisation efforts following a rise in online fraud across the country.
Oti Regional Director of the Commission, Robert Kwesi Boame, told the Ghana News Agency that recent intelligence pointed to an escalation in scams involving fake online shops and fraudulent accounts impersonating reputable companies.
He explained that all regional and district offices had been instructed to incorporate education on digital fraud prevention into their regular civic engagement programmes.
According to him, the upcoming awareness drive will focus on encouraging citizens to properly verify the identities of online vendors, adopt safer internet practices, authenticate information using reliable sources, and promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
Mr. Boame revealed that losses linked to online fraud were estimated at GH¢2.4 million in the first quarter of 2024, increasing sharply to GH¢4.4 million during the same period in 2025, amounting to an 83% rise.
He warned that incidents of online fraud typically increase during the festive season and urged the public to be extra cautious as the yuletide approaches.
