The MTN Ghana Foundation has awarded scholarships to 500 individuals, including 300 students from various tertiary institutions across the country and 200 teachers, under its Bright Scholarship program. The ceremony, which was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, academia, and industry, showcased MTN Ghana's commitment to supporting education in Ghana.
According to Steven Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, the scholarship program was part of the company's efforts to invest in the development of Ghanaians and contribute to the country's economic growth. "As a company, we had a culture that emphasized the sustainability of our country, Ghana. We believed that education was key to this sustainability, and that's why we had been supporting students and teachers through our Bright Scholarship program," he said.
Adwoa Wiafe, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, also spoke at the ceremony, highlighting the impact of the scholarship program. She said that the “ceremony is a celebration of determination. Inspiring hope and affirming that when businesses like MTN invest in people, they change the course of lives of people and for generations to come," she said. She encouraged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity and give back to their communities.
The scholarship package included tuition fees, accommodation, stipends, and laptops to support the students' academic pursuits. The beneficiaries were selected through a rigorous process that involved interviews and assessments to ensure that the awards went to the most deserving individuals.
Reverend Lawrence Asare Boadi, a member of the jury, commended MTN Ghana for its commitment to supporting education in Ghana. "I was truly delighted to stand before them today as a member of the jury who had the privilege of interviewing applicants for this year's MTN Foundation Prize Scholarship. This was my first experience, and I must confess that it was both inspiring and humbling," he said. He urged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity and give back to their communities.
The awardees, including Bernardo Opoku, a level 300 Geography student at the University of Ghana, and Salifu Asiyatu Asibiti, a level 200 Computer Science student at Koforidua Technical University, expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana for the scholarship opportunity. "This scholarship was an opportunity for me to pursue my education through the university level... It was a pathway for me to achieve more and also break through my financial journey," Bernardo Koku said. Salifu Asiyatu Asibiti added, "This scholarship was not just going to empower me, it was also going to help me give back into society, help me achieve my dreams."
The representative of the Minister of Education, Dr Emmanuel Newman, commended MTN Ghana for its efforts in supporting education in Ghana. "The focus of the Foundation on Science, Technology, Vocational Engineering, and Mathematics also aligned with the national target of achieving 60% enrollment in science," he said. He urged MTN Ghana to increase the number of scholarships and provide internship opportunities to students.
The Bright Scholarship program was part of MTN Ghana's efforts to contribute to the development of Ghana's human resources and promote economic growth. The company remained committed to supporting education and community development initiatives in Ghana.
