The Melcom Care Foundation has donated 900 punnets of red grapes to the Kaneshie West 1 School as part of efforts to promote healthy living among schoolchildren.
The donation, the first of its kind, is part of its new initiative dubbed “Healthy Living through the Eating of Healthy Fruits”, which intends to supply fruits and vegetables to selected schools.
The Brand and Communications Manager for Melcom, Sebastian Korle-Haward, said the foundation chose the Kaneshie West Cluster of Schools as the first to benefit from the initiative because it was located within the jurisdiction in which Melcom operated.
He believed that the initiative would, in the long run, help imbibe the habit of healthy living in the students.
Mr Korle-Haward was hopeful that the donation was going to help improve the health conditions of the students and consequently improve their academic performance.
The Coordinator of School Health Education Programme (SHEP) for the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, Christiana Owusu Anoff, also indicated that the initiative was a good one, as it would help incorporate the habit of eating fruits in the students.
“We’ve been advising the children that they should eat from all the food groups, especially they should add fruits and vegetables to their diets. This is a good initiative and I hope that it will be extended to a lot of schools,” she said.
The Headmistress of the school, Emelia Ohemeng, expressed gratitude to Melcom Care Foundation for selecting and donating to the school.
“We are grateful to the Melcom Group of Companies, at least we have been seeing some grapes in traffic and the malls and the rest, but some of us don't even have money to buy or, say, purchase,” she said
