STOCK MARKET REVIEW

The Ghana Stock Exchange closed lower for the week on the back of price declines by 2 counters. The GSE Composite Index (GSE CI) lost 2.82 points (-0.11%) to close at 2,460.42 points, reflecting a year-to-date (YTD) loss of 11.78%. The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE FI) remained flat for the week closing at 2,076.84 points (0%), reflecting YTD loss of 3.49%.

Market capitalization decreased by 0.29% to close the week at GH¢64,636.55 million, from GH¢64,822.78 million at the close of the previous week. This reflects a YTD appreciation of 0.22%.

Trading activity recorded a total of 432,396 shares valued at GH¢20,584,257.98 changing hands, compared with 103,111 shares, valued at GH¢2,122,784.03 in the preceding week.

MTN  dominated volume of trades whiles New Gold dominated value of trades for the week, accounting for 59.35% and 98.63% of shares traded respectively.

The market ended the week with no advancer and 2 laggards as indicated on the table below. `

CURRENCY MARKET

The Cedi strengthened against the USD for the week. It traded at GH¢12.5580/$, compared with GH¢13.1039/$ at week open, reflecting w/w gain and YTD depreciation of 4.35% and 52.17% respectively. This compares with YTD depreciation of 2.89% a year ago.            

The Cedi similarly strengthened against the GBP for the week. It traded at GH¢15.3955/£, compared with GH¢16.0353/£ at week open, reflecting w/w gain and YTD depreciation of 4.16% and 47.21% respectively. This compares with YTD depreciation of 0.40% a year ago.

The Cedi again strengthened against the Euro for the week. It traded at GH¢13.2258/€, compared with GH¢13.7388/€ at week open, reflecting w/w gain and YTD depreciation of 3.88% and 48.37% respectively. This compares with YTD appreciation of 5.42% a year ago.            

The Cedi further strengthened against the Canadian Dollar for the week. It opened at GH¢9.7506/C$ but closed at GH¢9.2043/C$, reflecting w/w gain  and YTD depreciation of 5.94% and 48.48% respectively. This compares with YTD depreciation of 2.88% a year ago.

GOVERNMENT SECURITIES MARKET

Government raised a sum of GH¢2,405.51 million for the week across the 91-Day and 182-Day Treasury Bills. This compared with GH¢2,748.57 million raised in the previous week.

The 91-Day Bill settled at 35.57% p.a from 36.18% p.a. last week whilst the 182-Day Bill settled at  36.53% p.a from 36.73% p.a. last week. The 364-Day Bill settled at 36.19% p.a from 35.90% p.a. last week.

COMMODITY MARKET

Oil price settled lower  as growing recession fears negated any supply woes after weak economic data from China and Europe. Brent futures traded at US$76.10 a barrel on Friday, compared to US$85.87 at week open, reflecting w/w  and YTD depreciations of 11.38% and 2.16% respectively.

Gold prices inched up last week despite stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data indicating more potential interest rate hikes, as more Chinese cities relaxed COVID-19 restrictions, raising hopes for a full reopening. Gold settled at US$1,810.70, from US$1,809.60 last week, reflecting w/w gain and YTD loss of 0.06% and 0.98% respectively.

The price of Cocoa recorded an increase for the week. The commodity traded at US$2,504.00  per tonne on Friday, from US$2,479 last week, reflecting  w/w gain and YTD loss of 1.01% and 0.63% respectively.
