The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lydia Seyram Alhassan, has encouraged students, particularly those within her constituency, to maintain faith in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
She stressed that the Vice President holds the potential to effect positive change and secure a brighter future, urging students not to be discouraged by the current economic climate.
Addressing more than 2,000 students at the University of Ghana, Legon, and the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) during her annual "Easter Feast and Games" event on Easter Monday, Ms. Alhassan highlighted Dr. Bawumia's promises to address economic challenges, including plans to eliminate certain government taxes like the E-levy if elected president in 2024.
Ms. Alhassan, affectionately known as Maa Lydia, organized the event to foster a sense of community and provide support to students who remained on campus during the Easter break, offering various Ghanaian and continental dishes alongside games for entertainment. Winners of the games were rewarded with GHS 500 each, demonstrating Alhassan's commitment to supporting youth development.
The feast followed Alhassan's recent distribution of GH?1,000 as seed money to women in two electoral areas within her constituency, benefiting market women in Dzorwulu and Tesano, with plans to extend the gesture to other areas soon.
Ms. Alhassan highlighted Dr. Bawumia's grasp of digitalization principles, emphasizing their importance in transforming Ghana's economy in a technologically advanced era. She expressed confidence in his economic expertise and digitalization initiatives, believing they hold the key to achieving progress.
Ms. Alhassan faces John Dumelo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming elections, representing a significant contest in the politically active Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency. The constituency gained attention following a by-election in January 2019, marked by political tensions.
The event signals Alhassan's dedication to community engagement and youth empowerment, reinforcing her vision for progress and development within the constituency.
