Aid workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo say children have stopped going to school in the eastern city of Uvira because of a recent spate of abductions.
They told the BBC that at least five children aged between six and 14 were taken in June.
A 14-year-old girl was left dead by the roadside with a note saying she was killed because her parents had not paid a $5,000 (£3,625) ransom.
Another child was killed, one is still being held and two have been released.
Other children have been targeted for abduction - but have managed to escape.
The aid workers say it is unclear who is behind the kidnappings, and that the police are doing little to help.
