President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday announced that government would establish a new Senior High School in Damanko in the Volta Region to increase the absorption rate of Basic Education students in the Region.
He said: "It is sad that a big area like Damanko has not got a Senior High School and I know that you will be included in the next batch of schools to be established in the second term of the NDC government after the elections."
President Mahama, who was addressing the chiefs and people of Damanko as part of his two-day tour of the Northern parts of the Volta region, said rather than promising free education for all SHS students in the country, the NPP should think of providing adequate schools that would expand the scope of admission at that level.
He said education was not a privilege to Ghanaians, but a right that could help pull them out of poverty, illiteracy, squalor and ignorance.
President Mahama said the District was also a beneficiary of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority and advised them to forward their names to benefit from projects of their choice under the programme.
He said a total of 16,000 farmers had benefited from inputs such as improved seeds, agro-chemicals and would only pay back after harvesting their crops.
"The essence of the SADA programme is to stem the perennial rural-urban drift and I know that years to come, other people will start moving from the urban areas to the rural areas in search of job opportunities.
The President was ushered into the town by an enthusiastic National Democratic Congress (NDC) group amidst drumming, singing and dancing.
