Indian veteran journalist and former member of India's northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir legislative council Sofi Ghulam Mohammad died here in state capital Srinagar Monday after a prolonged illness.
Sofi (77) was Editor-in-Chief and printer and publisher of popular Urdu daily, Srinagar Times.
He breathed his last at S K Institute of Medical Sciences,Soura, where he was undergoing treatment for the past two weeks.
A widower, he is survived by seven daughters.
Sofi started his journalistic career as a reporter in Congress mouthpiece 'Khidmat' in 1960s and launched his own newspaper, Srinagar Times, in 1969.
He was President of Kashmir Press Club and Daily
Newspaper Editors Conference a number of times.
Sofi had also authorised several books, including 'Loosmet Tarakh' and 'Sheeshi-Te-Sangistan', both of which won Cultural
Academy awards. He was nominated to the state Legislative Council in 2002.
