A circuit court in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region has remanded a refrigerator mechanic in police custody for two weeks for allegedly stealing GHc 4,700 (47 million old cedis) belonging to a returnee from Libya.
Kwaku Addom, 26, pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge but the court presided by Mr Michael Cudjoe Ntumy, after listening to the explanation, entered a plea of not guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector John Amponsah said the returnee, Mr Emmanuel Kwaku Osei, whilst in Libya, sent the money to Addom in Ghana to open an account for him but the accused did not.
When Osei returned to Ghana, the accused could neither produce the bank book nor the money with the explanation that he had used the money to purchase a vehicle.
Prosecutor said the accused could neither produce any documents on the said vehicle nor the vehicle itself but promised to dispose of it and refund the money to Osei but failed to honour that too.
He said after several attempts to retrieve his money failed, Osei reported the matter to the police.
During interrogation by the police the accused admitted the offence but pleaded to be given time to refund the money.
