The people of Oboadaka near Suhum in the Eastern Region, on Friday spent several hours in a clean-up exercise in the town.
Led by Mr. Nene Tettey, Elder of the community, the group tidied up their boreholes, weeded alongside the feeder road, desilted gutters and cleared garbage.
Mr. Tettey later told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the exercise, which was aimed at supplementing the efforts of the Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District Assembly to maintain a clean environment would be a regular feature.
He announced plans by the Town Development Committee (TDC) to improve sanitation in the area and urged members of the community not to default in the payment of their dues towards the realisation of their objectives.
Mr. Freeman Madzi, Executive Director of "ASCUM", a community-based Organisation with a branch at Oboadaka, who provided the community with logistics for the clean-up and also joined in the exercise, pledged his support for future clean-ups to be organised.
Mr. Madzi said the time had come when benevolent societies should extend their efforts to the promotion of the welfare of society as a whole instead of catering for members only.
