The Electricity Company of Ghana says it will clamp down on all illegal activities, especially the stealing of its resources and tampering with its installations.
This follows the arrest of four individuals in June 2024 for stealing drums of cables valued at approximately GHc500,000.
The four, comprising two Nigerians and two Ghanaians, were caught spraying the ECG logo on the cable drums.
Further investigation revealed that the cables were sold to them by three ECG contractors.
In a similar incident, four individuals, three Ghanaians and a Chinese national were detained by the police on Tuesday, August 6, for their involvement in manipulating and installing ECG meters.
Wisdom Sewlorm, an ECG agent, had taken possession of the meters for installation, but his employee, Ernest Afatsawu, interfered with them and sold them to a Chinese plastic manufacturing firm for GH¢1,200.
The firm’s manager, Rulian Shan, and sales manager, Ali Yakubu, were arrested on Friday, August 2. Ernest and Wisdom are currently under investigation.
The ECG estimates the financial loss to be over GH¢77,000 for the period between July and August.
Paul Abariga, Director in charge of Investigation, Prosecution, and Security at ECG, warned the public against engaging in such illegal activities, emphasizing the company’s commitment to protecting its resources and installations.
