Business Senior High School (BISCO) on Saturday launched its 60th anniversary here in Tamale, capital of the Northern Region on Saturday
The theme for the anniversary is BISCO @60: “The Beacon of Business Education in Northern Ghana.”
The Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr Alhassan Tampuli, who launched the anniversary advised the students to be disciplined, adding that it was only hard work and determination that could lead to a successful future.
Mr Tampuli, also Member of Parliament(MP) for Gusheigu Constituency in the Northern Region urged them to take their academic work seriously to enable them to excel in their academic pastures
“Avoid bad friends you are all from different homes, concentrate on what brought you here,” he added.
The Deputy Minister said Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo’s government was committed to brightening the future of students in the country.
Mr Tampuli however, urged them to study hard and to see themselves ahead in the next academic leader of their studies.
The Board Chairman of Northern Development Authority (NDA), Dr Sulemana Abdulai, urged the students never to give up in any challenges in the face of frustration, in the field of their academic work.
He advised them “to brighten the corner” whenever they found themselves in the field of education or any part of social life.
Dr Abdulai said they should demonstrate commitment to achieving academic excellence.
The Headmistress of the School, Mrs Sussana Fati Braimah, said the celebration was to get a platform to establish a foundation to solve some of the challenges of the school.
She said the school had been experiencing a number of growing challenges, adding that the school was in dire need of a girls’ dormitory as the population of the school was growing every academic year.
Mrs Braimah added that the school lacked furniture which made it difficult for continuing students when final year students were writing their mock examination.
She added that the staff bungalows in the school were woefully inadequate and appealed to authorities to help put up more accommodation for the staff of the school.
The headmistress commended the old students of the school for building and furnishing a sickbay for students.
BISCO, she said was established 60 years ago by Rev Gogoe with only one student being admitted, and he attended classes for two months before getting classmates.
The school started with the name Northern College of Commerce in 1963, renamed to Tamale Commercial Institute, to Tamale Commercial Secondary School then to Tamale School of Business Education and now Business Senior High School (BISCO).
The idea of the establishment of the school in Northern Region was to train students in business studies
The students population now stood at 2,386 comprising 1,331 being males whilst 1,057 being females.
