The Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says the government has employed 92,000 nurses in the last three years, leaving no backlog of graduate nurses in the country.

He said measures had been put in place to absorb future nursing graduates, and encouraged people in the health sector to do more for the country.

The Vice-President said this when he inaugurated a clinic at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region last Sunday during his four-day tour of the region.

He said the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country brought to the fore the urgent need to provide healthcare facilities at every level to serve the communities.

Hospital

Dr. Bawumia promised the people of Adansi Asokwa that the government would construct a district hospital for the people of the area in the shortest possible time.

A parcel of land had already been allotted for the project through the facilitation of the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. K. T. Hammond.

Nurses recruitment

The Ministry of Health (MoH), this year, received financial clearance to recruit more nurses to augment the national numbers.

The clearance from the Ministry of Finance has made it possible for the MoH to recruit nurses who graduated from both public and private health training institutions.

This year alone, 54,892 professionals in the health service delivery value chain will be employed by the close of this year.

Out of that number, 18,173 are diploma and degree nurses.

Also, the government has announced plans to build new district hospitals across the country as part of an initiative to improve the health delivery system.
