Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday directed the country's auditor-general to take his accumulated annual leave, sparking mixed reactions among Ghanaians online.
Auditor-general Daniel Yaw Domelevo had accumulated 132 leave days, having taken only nine days leave since his appointment in 2016.
A statement from the presidency said the order was in line with a law that requires all workers to go on leave. It cited a precedence of a former president who directed a former auditor-general to take his accumulated leave of 264 days.
Ghanaian on social media reacted to the president's statement differently.
Some like Kotoku felt the auditor general was being pushed out, tweeting that "Office of the Auditor-General and Governor of Ghana is also protected under Article 146, hence they will frustrate you till you resign ( sacking yourself). Expect the Auditor General to resign soon."
Henry tweeted; "Just when Ghana’s Auditor-General hinted of auditing the Covid-19 fund, Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo asked Mr. Dormelevo to proceed on his accumulated leave."
Others like Snowbal dismissed the concerns writing; "Did the President err in asking the Auditor-General to take his accumulated leave? There is something I don't understand is why are people making it a tribal issue? Ghana we develop with such mindset?"
